Have you heard Lake Street Dives's song "Twenty-Five?" I sent it my friend who got divorced at the same time I did and we were both like, Damn

I'm ordering that McCullers book, thank you! I have been struggling with a biographical essay about a Florida novelist who fabulized everything about her real life, and this sounds like a great approach!

Fantastic! I learned about the book via a Courtney Maum class. I swear I learn everything from her! ;)

Katrina, I was pondering this morning my conflicting feelings about this day for our nation. It's so different than the way I was raised. I don't know how I feel about our country anymore, or about being American.

I, too, buy or put on hold at our library more books than I'll ever be able to read. Yet I continue to rack up a collection.

Great song list. I don't know some of these artists. I have an eclectic taste in music. Lately I've been into indie pop. I love the synthwave/synthpop bands Cannons and Yumi Zouma. Total chillout music.

I realize today I have much to be grateful for, but I also feel a sense of grief. I'm still sitting with that. My thoughts didn't trail in the same direction yours did, but I'm trying to see things from a place of hope and healing.

I had a discussion with a friend the other day about my disappointment with American right now. She's a 911 first responder, and she can't understand why I don't love our country. I get her viewpoint -- I felt very patriotic after 911. I think our country came together in a way it never has before. And I can't even imagine how much greater that feeling must have been as a first responder. But we're just not there any more. I want to be. I want to love my country again. But I want my country to love all our marginalized communities as well. I want our country to love black, brown, unhoused, and poor people, too. We're just not moving in that direction. :(

I'm glad you enjoyed the playlist. I'm going to check out your music as well. My kids introduce me to a lot of new stuff. I love to listen to most everything... except modern country. I'm definitely more of a classic country girl if I'm a country girl at all.

I feel exactly as you do, Katrina - that I want to love our nation again, but there are so many glaring double standards of exclusion that I can't sing anything about how we are the "land of the free and home of the brave."

Yesterday I told Ben exactly what you said here - about how our country stood together and set aside our differences after 9/11, but how we've strayed from that! We are now so polarized by our beliefs that I can't see how, on a macrocosmic level, we will move beyond what triggers us so that we can truly listen and enter into the lives of those who are not like us.

I guess all I can do is be that person and to continue being open and love those who aren't like me. I've always had a heart for the marginalized, just like I've always had a heart for the shelter and rescue animals. ❤️

P.S. My husband is a classic country fan. I like the 90s country artists. My faves are Brooks & Dunn, Tracy Lawrence, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, JoDee Messina, Shania Twain... I'll stop now lol.

This: “Do you want your friends and relatives in concentration camps for being gay or trans or black or brown or unhoused or different in any way that doesn’t suit the “king,” or do you want lower gas prices? I mean, truly — what’s your priority here?”

Plus, dig the music list!

It's shocking to me, really, that people don't think about what's going to happen to our minorities in a Project 2025 country. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the playlist. XO

Packed with so much thought, Katrina, and I can't wait to dive into your recommendations. Play list, books etc. My gratitude and I was surprised to not see a Bee Gees song on that list? Just sayin' 😆

Ha! I can't believe I didn't share a Bee Gees song! What an oversight! My bonus Bee Gees track right now would be "Love You Inside and Out." It has such a fun groove and just enough angst. XO
